Mental Health Tips – Healthy Relationships

“A healthy relationship will never require you to sacrifice your friends, your dreams, or your dignity.” – Dinkar Kalotra

Relationships are so important in the human experience; not just romantic relationships, but consider the relationships you have with your friends, roommates, family, and other communities on campus or at home. The backgrounds and circumstances of students in college are diverse, and they are so important because they can teach us about different cultures, backgrounds, and points of view. College relationships can also turn into opportunities for personal growth, support, care and understanding. Ultimately, people who have healthy relationships are more likely to feel happier and satisfied with their lives. They are less likely to have physical and mental health problems. Healthy relationships can increase your sense of worth and belonging and help you to feel less alone. Here are some tips to consider:

  1. Respect—respect helps build a sense of safety, trust, and well-being in relationships.

  1. Boundaries— knowing when you need time and space is important. Saying ‘no’ is ok. True relationships are reinforced by having and respecting boundaries.

  1. Communication—allows for you to explain your emotions and experience with someone else and communicate your needs and expectations.

  1. Intentionality—be intentional about what your needs are and set aside time for yourself and others.
